Tuition Remission Petition

Dear President Kaler,

The University of Minnesota is one of the best public research universities in the country, and we also want it to be one of the best places to work in Minnesota, whether you are a faculty member, researcher, or staff. Consequently we are always striving to attract and retain excellent employees.

Because we know first-hand how important higher education is for a successful future, we want to improve the working environment at the U of M by ensuring that all employees and our immediate family members can attend our outstanding institution tuition-free.

The U of M currently offers no tuition remission benefit for spouses, partners, or children, and often only a partial benefit to employees ourselves. Tuition remission for partners and dependents is a common employment benefit for faculty and staff at numerous other public and private universities. Moreover, the U of M Regents Scholarship Program has recently moved in the wrong direction. While it once granted free tuition to all employees, it now offers only a 75% tuition discount for employees who are working on a graduate degree.

We know that such a benefit will help attract and retain excellent employees. We stand united to do whatever it takes to ensure that all U of M faculty and staff have access to full tuition remission for ourselves and our families.
